Philly signs Andrews through 2015 season: The Philadelphia Eagles have locked up third-year offensive lineman Shawn Andrews within an eight-year contract extension. Do you agree with signing someone to this type of long-term deal, and how much does it actually mean, seeing as it's an NFL contract?

Sure, sign him to whatever length deal you want, just make sure there's a clause in it saying he can't ride a donorcycle, with or without a helmet.

While the Eagles fell short on the field last year, over the past few years their front office has made their share of both smart and foolish decisions. Being from the Philadelphia, I hear everyones opinion, most of which are along the lines of the Eagles don't handle their players very well. While this may be true, it is much more so for players in the skill positions. This is not the case on the line here. The Eagles have proven that they have an eye for talent in the trenches, now boasting what is possibly one of the top young lines in the leauge. Now heres to hoping the Eagles get over their habbit of not signing aging veterans so they can sign Brian Dawkins for a few more years.

I can't even imagine the taxes involved in this deal.

Could be good...could be bad...but hey, what say's they don't cut him in 2 years? That's been Philly's (and the rest of the NFL's track record)...sign a guy to a 7 year deal, backload the salary in years 4, 5, 6, 7. Cut him after 2 seasons if he sucks. Make him take a pay cut after 3 years. That's the NFL for ya.

Frazer and Chemwiz said it all. NFL contracts always favor the team and locking up a promising young player is just good, smart business.

I can understand signing players to long term deals early on but an eight year contract in a league that a player usually lasts around half that time is not a good idea. There are so many things that can go wrong in eight years that I won't bother to list them. Of course, it could go both ways. Andrews can turn out to be a stud or an Aaron Gibson. Only time will tell but at the moment I think its a dumb move by the Eagles.
