Sampson to become new Indiana coach

I'm sure that when he looks south to Texas, east to Stillwater and north to Kansas he must feel the pinch of these programs building toward explosion while he's losing a lot of key players and without much in the way of reinforcements coming in. The near future for OU basketball is looking bleak which I'm sure made it easier for him to make this decision. I hope he does well at IU.... he did a very good job at Oklahoma competing with the UT's KU's and OSU's of the world as well as greasy cheaters like Quin Snyder at missouri.

He won't have to worry about basketball being the second sport on campus either. Norman lives for football, basketball is just to pass the time until spring drills.

I love how coaches can leave in the middle of an NCAA investigation of their program. The article mentions that penalties could follow the coach. Does that ever happen? It does seem that a player who does something wrong loses eligibility and a coach can just move on to another program.

Totally agreed, bperk. I think if a university is found to have committed violations during a coach's watch, that coach -- and only that coach --can only be employed by the same university until the end of the sanctions. It would make coaches think twice about allowing some of this crap to go on under them, and it would marry a university to a coach for better or for worse.

But if the coach is the problem, shouldn't the university be allowed to fire them? I'd want to clean house, and that's really what the NCAA wants; they're usually more interested in cooperation than justice. "Greasy Cheaters?" Sounds like a burger joint.

Actually, Hugh, no. I'd like to see the universities stop playing musical chairs with dishonest coaches. If they were forced to keep a coach who committed indiscretions on their watch, it would make them be much more careful about who they bring on in the first place.

As a Indiana University local, the real reason they hired him was recruiting and he was the best that they could afford....they are still seething over Ohio St. getting Greg Oden from IU's backyard and that is probably one of the biggest reasons Davis was on the hot seat(that and the NIT of course)

Davis should have never lost Greg Oden. That was his biggest downfall and not being a coach that stressed offence. That is all these Indiana basketball fans can see is points, points, and more points. The Pacers will be looking for a new coach soon because Carisle stresses defence. One more not related to site, GO BLUE!!!

Um excuse me coach? As one of these indiana fans, let me just stress to you how much defense does matter....mike davis never had a chance with greg oden, honestly neither does thad matta, he hads one yr., lucky if he gets that.... But i can tell by your post that you have never played pickup ball on the iu campus, it's not defense or offense, it's basketball

I'm sorry, but I must respectfully disagree. This is Indiana, where a lot of high school and college players will sometimes avoid the huge breakaway slam dunk becuase it's just not the way Hoosier Ball is played. Lay it up quietly, get back, and play some damned defense. That's IU basketball.

Sadly though, all of sports are missing the point....everything is a celebration or an excuse to talk trash rather than leading by example.... High school ball in Indiana isn't sometimes forgoing the dunk, though, they always do...just for the reason that they don't want to run for the rest of practice
