Lions ink Mike Martz as Offensive Coordinator

It's one thing that he had the "greatest show on turf" thing going with the Rams. If he does anything within light years of that with Detroit then he truly is a miracle worker.

SWEEEEEEEET... I 2nd that, but lets hope he avoids the Lions curse that has killed more then one career. As a long time fan of the team I'll keep my fingers crossed, but won't hold my breath.

Now all the Lions need is Marshall Faulk, Torry Holt, Isaac Bruce, Orlando Pace and Kurt Warner. Outside of Roy Williams, that whole offense is soft.

This is a great stroke of luck for Kevin Jones. It guarantees his legs will be fresh until he can move to a real team, as Martz has no fucking idea how to effectively utilize running backs.

Well, I think that Martz should learn from his St. Louis fiasco and see the three things that he has here: 1. A pretty good back capable of carrying the load 2. A QB who has TOO MANY questionable traits 3. Three underachieving WRs Good luck with airing it out guys...

As a St. Louis fan, we are more than happy to give him to you. We will miss his offensive prowess, but he was a cancer to our organization. I hope that he has better luck in Detroit.

The article says he's going to be QB coach too. Sure would be nice if he had a real QB to coach. I've said it before and I'll say it again, Harrington is in over his head and just can not compete at the pro level. He rose to his level of incompetence. No coach will ever get a professional level of play out of him...ever.

So the on-again off-again is on again? Alright. Now, I hope he's got some magic yet in those fingers, although it'll take more than that to turn the Lions' ship around. Joey Harrington may yet pan out, but like they say, he's no Marc Bulger.

This is a great day in Detroit Lion's football! If Mike Martz can make anything out of the potential the Lions offesive weapons have, we may see a real team on the field on Sunday. Let's go LIONS!

Note this odd coincidence in Detroit coaching hires: Matt Millen has now hired: Mornhinweg, Mariucci, Marinelli and now Martz. They might get John Madden out of the broadcasters booth in a couple years. Dick Jauron never had a chance.

Looks like Millen thinks he can continue to screw up a bad thing with no self-depreciation. I can't wait until the Detroit football fan realizes that they've been taking it up the anus for years due to an owner who doesn't care, and a manager who couldn't find his ass with both hands. And then wait until Millen finally DOES get fired, and has to try finding a job elsewhere.

well done detroit, i believe finally millen has a clue about how to build a team first the defensive coordinator hendersen excellant choice! hiring a coach who learned under robinson,dungy,gruden nice choice! now hiring martz who will get the offense going in the right direction he will get the qb situation straight,kevin jones your wish came true you are going to get an offensive line that works to create holes for rbs,offensive plays that will keep the defenses guessing for once instead of reading every play i didnt like the lions choice of millen but with the moves millen made this year in his coaching hires bravo i have studied martz's offensive units over the years and lions fans get ready to eat your fire millen signs i did

As a Detroit fan, this one makes my stomach turn. I remember when we did this the first time with Mouse Davis. Martz, as a head coach, has a troubled past with authority, namely GMs and ownership. Now, Martz enters the organization as a coordinator underneath Marinelli who has no head coaching experience. I see a clash of personalities in the making. One that will hopefully lead to the demise of Millen and perhaps a change of ownership. Listen up Karmanos, sell your tampa hockey team and get yourself a local football squad.

At least Detroit doesn't have to worry about him (mis)managing the clock, throwing out the flag on bizarre challenges, or placing absolutely zero importance on special teams. The man was clueless as a head coach- lets hope he fares better as an OC, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Oh, yerfatma, if only you lived in St. Louis. Mike Martz was the author of a brilliant offensive scheme for about two years, and I think then it worked best because Dick Vermeil was running the show. When Martz became head honcho, he immediately completely forgot that a) he had a stud running back in Marshall Faulk and b) you occasionally have to field a defense. Frankly, I'm quite sure if you were to make up a list of the worst playcalls in the past five years, Martz would have 15 of the top 20. Good O coordinator under a strong head coach -- lousy head coach. Can he be just as good under an untested head coach? I seriously doubt it.

I'm glad they got Martz, its better than last years similar hiring of Dick Jauron (how he got another coaching job is beyond me) and I think that he has the potential to do very well in Detroit. Then again, it is Detroit so I should take that all back.

Martz's first coaching appointment was at Bullard High in Fresno, California, in 1973. He also coached at San Diego Mesa (1974, 1976-77), San Jose State (1975), Santa Ana College in Santa Ana, California (1978), Fresno State (1979), University of the Pacific (1980-81), and Minnesota (1982). He was quarterbacks and receivers coach at Arizona State from 1983-87 and was the Sun Devils' offensive coordinator in 1984 and from 1988-91. He joined the Rams in 1992 as an unpaid assistant coach. Martz also had a two-year coaching stint with the Washington Redskins (1997-98). I just couldn't go on living with the visual thought of Martz popping out of Dick Vermeil's head.
