It was 31 years ago today that the Birmingham Americans beat the Florida Blazers 22-21 to take home the one-and-only World Bowl trophy as champions of the late, not-so-lamented World Football League. The Ams jumped out to a 22-0 lead and held of a furious Florida rally. And Miss Florida, who later went on to bigger things was there...

Not much to choose between the two logos, eh? And to be sure, that was the high point of Miss Florida's career. Well, that and marrying Major Dad.

I need one of those referee jerseys.

Skin-tight, even. The MLB should consider that for umps.

Cool post, ajaffe. Thanks. Not many people in the stands, but I guess that is why it was the one-and-only. Larry Csonka, Jim Kiick and Paul Warfield are the only player I really remember who played in the WFL. Speaking of Csonka, it appears he had a rough time in Alaska recently.

from another site: When the players took the field, the 72,000-seat Legion Field wasn't even half full. Attendance was announced as 32,376 fans, but it was later revealed that the figure was actually 22,918 with only 20,985 of those having paid to get in. What was worse, most of those sat up in the cheaper seats.

oooops. Those are Vince McMahon-type numbers. Somebody took a bath.

I own an autographed picture of George Mira. I have no idea why.

Hey,what about Czonka, Kiick, and Warfield.

Csonka, a Hall of Famer, had been hunting for reindeer on Alaska's remote Umnak Island off the Aleutian Islands on Wednesday while filming an episode of his TV show. How much sport is there in killing an animal with a shiney red nose? Now, shooting a polar bear camaflaged in the snow - that's a different story.
