Was a great pitching duel- probably the most unhittable I've ever seen Wakefield, and of course Johnson was dominant. It is true that if the Tall One can hit a higher level and maintain it through the rest of the season the Yankees have to be considered a favorite for the wild card, but if Wake and Schilling can continue to pitch like they did this weekend, the Sox have to be considered favorites to win it all, despite losing the series this weekend.
Great series. Rivera definitely made a statement, because he easily could have given that one up yesterday. Listened to Yankee radio on Saturday and the sky was falling. Sterling spent an entire half inning what-if'ing and 8-1 Red Sox lead into a tie ballgame, and the following half inning Waldmyn was sticking a fork in the Yankees if they lost Sunday. Is it that desperate? I was expecting to hear some good Bucky Dent talk.
btw, that "Yankee Nation" comment and the entire headline is pure Shaughnessy. Gotta find some way to replace all the curse talk and get the Boston fan base hating him and his curly locks again.
Anyone else notice the lack of "fire" in the weekend series? Yes, the rivalry is still there but it no longer feels like the biggest rivalry is sports (as FOX loved to point out ALL last season and post-season). No more "1918" chants, no "who's your daddy?" chants, no pictures of the Babe on signs across Yankee Stadium. After the choke last season and Yankees fighting for a playoff spot this season it's a lot more tame in the Stadium. I'm not complaining, though... it was still some damn good baseball to watch.
this season it's a lot more tame in the Stadium. have you been in the Stadium during the red sox games this year? i'd say it's just as intense as ever, especially with more and more boston fans finding their way to the bronx. just because there are no more pre-fab chants doesn't mean the place is tame.
I think I'm going to start email George Steinbrenner the link to the Salary vs. Performance site just as a little reminder of the ROI he's getting for his megabucks team. Anybody want to make a bet on how much the Yankees spend next year if they don't make the playoffs this season? I'm betting its $250 million+.
